8 chat show hosts' worst-ever celebrity interviews, from Justin Bieber to Hugh Grant

You might think it's a dream job being a chat-show host, but on the odd occasion they'll get a guest who doesn't really give a crap that they're in front of the camera. Whether it's because the host rubbed them up the wrong way, the celeb woke up on the wrong side of the bed, or they're just… hard work, the following stars all made an enemy of their interviewer in ten minutes or less.

8. EAMONN HOLMES vs DAVID CASSIDY

"Just when I thought my @DavidBlaine i/view could never be topped along comes another David to steal the Crown @DavidCassidy," tweeted Eamonn Holmes after his This Morning chat with David Cassidy in September 2015.

Halfway though a divorce, and having just declared bankruptcy, the former '70s teen idol wasn't in the best of moods. He came across as sarcastic and uninterested, actively looking away from the camera and staring into space at every opportunity. "Are you here to rubbish me?!" he asked Eamonn at one point, before shouting, "Don't interrupt me!" at co-host Ruth Langsford. Calm down, mate.

7. JONATHAN ROSS VS JOHANNA KONTA

According to audience members, Jonathan Ross' February 2016 interview with tennis pro Johanna Konta was SO awkward that ITV didn't even air most of it. Apparently Jonathan asked Jo about people she would and wouldn't like to play against, and she told him: "This is such a boring question." And when he commented on her recent performance in the Australian Open, she replied: "Is this your professional opinion by the way?" Someone from the audience told the press: "Jonathan handled things very well but Johanna seemed really frosty. It wasn't very comfortable to watch at all."

6. JON STEWART VS HUGH GRANT

Not only was Hugh Grant Jon Stewart's least-favourite guest ever, but he even banned him from The Daily Show after his appearance in 2009, where the actor "gave everyone shit the whole time" and acted like "a big pain in the ass".

For example: when the host previewed a clip from the Hugh's movie Did You Hear About the Morgans?, he reportedly moaned: "What is that clip? It's a terrible clip." And the host's reply? "Well, then make a better f***ing movie." Hugh later admitted his behaviour was horrible, tweeting: "Turns out my inner crab got the better of me with TV producer in '09. Unforgivable. J Stewart correct to give me kicking."

Can we have Love Actually Hugh back now, please?

5. OPRAH VS ELIZABETH TAYLOR

In the 43 years she's been presenting TV, there's only one celebrity Oprah really didn't like: Elizabeth Taylor. "It's still painful to watch," she says of their February 1998 conversation, "for many reasons – including my bad hair." With the host being briefed beforehand that she wasn't allowed to quiz Liz about her seven marriages, it left little to talk about.

And the replies the actress did offer were short so short and curt, that Oprah thought she'd cheekily wind her up a little. "You're so revealing," she said. "You just tell everything! I declare, you've got to stop talking so much, Ms. Taylor!" Apparently Liz later apologised and put her bad form down to hip and back pain. Suuuure.

4. CHELSEA HANDLER VS JUSTIN BIEBER

Plenty of women would love to get hit on by Justin Bieber, but not TV host Chelsea Handler. And especially not when he was just 16 in February 2011. "He was trying to flirt with me, and it was so uncomfortable," she said after Justin told her on air "you look very beautiful".

"That's his shtick, like he would come on and flirt with you, and you just felt like a child molester right away – and I was like, 'I don't want to feel that way.'" She says – after she joked about the pair being in a relationship together during the interview.

3. BEN SHEPHARD VS WILLIAM SHATNER

"I'm going for a drink… on my goodness me!" said Ben Shephard after his super stressful interview with Star Trek legend William Shatner in October 2016. When Ben asked him if he had a favourite episode of the show, the actor sarcastically replied: "Noooo, I've never been asked that question before… that was a very unusual question, did you do research before this?" not realising the questions were send in by fans.

"Is that you Neil?" he said addressing Ben later on, and presumably not even realising he was on Good Morning Britain. All that beaming up must have frazzled his brain.

2. MICHAEL PARKINSON VS MEG RYAN

When somebody has interviewed over 2,000 people, it's quite the feat being the worst. Meg Ryan managed it, though, when Parky called her a "twerp" after having her on his BBC show Parkinson in October 2003.

Aside from the fact she gave an awkward and defensive interview, and told him to "wrap it up", she was rude to fellow guests Trinny and Susannah, and was even caught in her dressing room making her entourage stand at the other end of the room, facing away from her.

"I started looking at her and thought, 'I don't like you very much,'" said Michael. "And she was looking at me thinking, 'I don't like you very much.'" Wait, isn't this the plot to a Meg Ryan movie?

1. CLIVE ANDERSON VS THE BEE GEES

When The Bee Gees appeared on Clive Anderson Talks Back in October 1997, things seemed to be going well, until Clive made a series of jokes that Barry Gibb did not find funny. He quipped about them not being "hit writers" but "shit writers", and said, "I didn't realise you were real brothers… I thought you were sisters, actually".

When Clive praised Robin's solo single, but failed to mention Barry's, the singer said: "We're getting on like a storm, aren't we Clive? In fact I might just leave..." and then he did just that, with his brothers following suit. "They were also rude to the assistant floor manager, which was a bit unfair," said Clive afterwards. *insert joke about their love not being deep here*
