Things I have learned about Blogging

Here is a post I put up on TMP about blogging after looking at another TMPer's post about his new blog:

"Photos are important. When uploading them, make sure they are accurately labeled. I think Google searches image files by their labels as well as by other means. In addition, use lots of light in your photos and watch out for shadows. Light does not have to be anything fancy, even table lamps are fine. You can adjust the white balance in Picassa or iPhoto. Be aware of the depth of field. Do not put out of focus figures in the foreground if you can avoid it. You will get greater depth of field for any shutter speed by using more light. I still have trouble getting enough depth of field in my photos.

Post comments on other blogs you like and use your blog url in your signature. Title your posts in such a way that the subject is clearly described. The date of the post is not a good title. Pick topics of interest to a larger audience. I put up a silly post about converting Epic figures to HoTT. The post has a lot of photographs and is appropriately titled. It is one of my fastest rising posts with respect to page views. This is the case even though my blog is almost exclusively 25mm horse and musket. Who knew?

Shorten the text, use a slightly larger font, and be aware of the readability of the text. I am personally not wild about white on black text but I don't know if that is because I am getting old or it really is harder to read than black on white.

Be in the hobby and regularly post about it (although, don't risk divorce). I try to post 4 to 5 times a month which reflects my rate of painting and gaming. My least popular posts are those about "the hobby" and those with no photographs. My most popular posts are listed on the right side of my blog. Often they are popular because I mentioned the particular post as a solution to a problem someone on TMP posted."

I stand by these comments.  Like a lot of people in the hobby, I am blogging for vanity reasons, not profit.  Therefore, the only score I keep is based upon the number of page views.  If you want to sell something, I am sure there are other things you need to do to "drive traffic" and generate sales.

For those of you with blogs, what are your strategies for generating traffic?
